Introduction
If you are making a professional site, you really need a proper domain, as supplied by ICANN (eg .COM, .ORG, .NET, the new .BIZ and .INFO or any of the country domains like .CO.UK). Now, though, ICANN has competition from NEW.NET and NAMESPACE who have created their own TLD's (Top Level Domains) The problem is, your ISP needs special software to recognise them; but their popularity does seem to be on the increase as they offer a whole lot more than ICANN!
UK Domain Registries
These are registrars that are based in the UK, but will register the Generic TLD's as well as .UK ones

These are registrars that are based in the US, and register the Generic TLD's

International Domain Registries
These are usually the NIC's of other countries or domain registrars that have bought the rights to sell a country's TLD eg .WS.

HMNic (.HM) START.HM .IM .LA
.LA names for sale .MU .NU PKNic (.PK)
TONic (.TO) .TV WEBSITE.WS WSSITE.WS
